To The Young Ones

I am worried for the young ones.
Evidently many sat under numskull shepherds
who banged on purity until it became
something gnarled, an assortment of rings
and cards to bar the entrance to Eden.
Those men oughta say they’re sorry,
but I doubt that’ll ever happen.
The rub to all this is the propagation of bad news.
Is sex body on body and manner and possibly
amazing technique? Yes, although (take it from me)
technique requires a fidelity to time.
But its much more than that.
Sex is soul-blood, and each coupling
a transfusion of our imperfect secrets and dreams.
As such it was never pure, never virginal.
It is not something to fear; however,
it is worthy of our cherishing for
it creates our remembrances.

Great thoughts, posted link on my FB page. I have 3 adult children that I should probably apologize to. I went that whole route and it didn’t work. Probably should have had some more honest conversations with them. Hopefully others will heed your advice. Thanks John

Love this, John. A beautiful contemplation of in-carnation…and replanting the holiest “imperfect” seed strained out by our fearful parents with their distaste for the natural world and their soft screens.

  4. Thank you seems inadequate but thank you. And how can you say in a few lines what most of us have tried to say in hundreds of words?

    JDB- great post-:)-
after raising four kids who are now in there late 20′s and early 30′s….my sense is:

~ the focus should be on “heart/mind purity” and not on “penis/vagina purity”

~ teach about God’s purposes for sexuality (celebration- procreation- protection- pleasure- and comfort) rather than; signing a piece of paper, wearing a purity ring, or lots of “you shall not!”

~ my take is providing accurate information to children and young adults is not the same as giving them permission

~ and of course living out and modeling a life of forgiveness….and grace, always grace

  6. Your words sing a chorus of grace notes, always. I am finding you don’t write as often as I’d like. Your words, your poetry…gift. I just savor them when they arrive in their black box wrapped in white bow of canvas.

  7. A beautiful statement full of grace. For all your stated reasons, we call it marriage glue at our house.

  8. this is the kind of truth that might help us heal. thank you.
