At Most

She did not need my pity
yet her very life dared me
to notice she was twelve
at most and each of her steps
were slow with a cane while
I took two stairs at a time
as I always have.
Our eyes never met but her easy
smile brought swift tears to mine
for as deep as I could see she was
a girl of twelve at most who has
possibly always known three legs
and she walks happy in our blinding
two legged race.
